NORLAND PDENorland pDEXA® Cost Effective Bone Densitometry Introduction
The new Norland-Stratec pDEXA®, peripheral Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometer, determines forearm bone mineral density (BMD) to indentify those who have the greatest risk of osteoporosis BMD is measured in the distal radius and ulna (predominantly trabeculae), the proximal radius and ulna and the proximal radius (predominantly corticalis). Initial and follow-up measurement scans are made from the same regions of interest. Distal and proximal soft tissue values are determined independently, resulting in optimal BMD accuracy at each scan site. In vivo research indicates a high correlation between AP Spine BMD and Distal Radius and Ulna BMD, and Fermoral BMD and Distal Radius and Ulna BMD. Thus, forearm density strongly reflects Femur and Spine density.
